San Antonio Express-News (TX) - July 10, 2002
Deceased Name: Hindman, 61, dedicated herself to her family
Loy Lyn Hindman was the heart of her family and was always the first one to rise and the last one in bed.
"She was our Christmas, our Easter and our birthdays. She dedicated her life to her family," said her husband of 38 years, John F. Hindman.
Hindman, 61, died Friday from an acute blood clot.
Four weeks ago, Hindman was injured in an automobile accident, but her injuries were not life-threatening, her husband said.
Hindman, who was studying to become a registered nurse at San Antonio College, began to experience some discomfort in one of her legs, her husband said. During that time they were planning to travel to Fort Worth, where the couple's daughter was expected to give birth to their sixth grandchild.
"Doctors found a blood clot and wanted to hospitalize her," John Hindman said. "She told them she was studying to become a registered nurse and could medicate herself and explained we were supposed to be in Fort Worth."
During their drive to Fort Worth, Hindman began to experience shortness of breath and pain in her back.
The couple drove to the hospital where their daughter had just given birth, but Hindman died before she could see her new grandchild.
John Hindman, who joined the military shortly after he graduated from the University of Nebraska, said his wife always loved San Antonio and always considered it home.
Originally from Lincoln, Neb., Hindman and her husband found themselves stationed at Kelly AFB and fell in love with the city.
"We wanted to settle in San Antonio. This was our kind of town," her husband said.
During the time the family crisscrossed the country, Hindman decided to home school all of her children.
"She was devoted to raising our children in God's way. She had special places where the children went to study," her husband said.
"In Nebraska, she had what she called peanut butter and jelly park. She always made it fun for the children," he said.
Three years ago, Hindman, a member of Oak Hills Church of Christ, decided to pursue a lifelong dream and enrolled in the nursing program at San Antonio College.
"Her dream was to become a medical missionary," her husband said. "Our son is a physician and did medical missionary work in Mexico. She was scheduled to graduate in May. She was everything Jesus wanted us to be."
Besides her husband, Hindman is survived by a brother, Donald Wright of Lincoln, Neb.; three daughters, Kimberly Pierson of Costa Mesa, Calif., Jennifer Limas of Arlington and Meagan Hindman of San Antonio; three sons, John T. Hindman and Jason M. Hindman, both of Austin, and Michael G. Hindman of New Braunfels; and six grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 9 a.m. today at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home, 6321 Bandera Road. Burial will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
