Obituary
Elizabeth Orabella Doud was born in Van buren county, Iowa, September 3, 1864. Died at her home near Selma, Iowa, Dec. 31, 1895, aged 31 years, 3 months and 28 days. Her home was with her parents at Douds Station, Iowa, until her marriage to Ira McCullough, March 9, 1893, since which time they have resided near Selma, Iowa. Two children blessed their union -- Harold now two years old; De Witt, born Oct 18, 1895, died Dec. 26, 1895. This affliction no doubt contributed to her death. She became converted about seven years ago, and although not uniting with any church she had lived a distinct Christian life as evidenced by the kind, self-sacrificing spirit shown in her every day life, her mind the last years especially turning to her Savior. During the last days of her sickness she realized that death was near but she was calm and peaceful, and said she was ready, that she was trusting in her Savior. A loving wife, a sacrificing mother, a kind daughter and sister has gone home.

Oxnam earned a B.A. from De Pauw University and his M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Southern California. Though his father was a noted Bishop, Oxnam was the first Drew president who was not an ordained minister. Instead, he held many academic posts before becoming president of Pratt Institute in 1957. In 1960, Oxnam was urged to accept presidency of Drew. His years were marked by turbulence - student protests and tensions between the university's three separate schools were major concerns - but Oxnam's goals for a modern university had prevailed. In 1974, Oxnam died after a battle with cancer.

Omer T GARRISON - Biography
OMER T. GARRISON
The homestead of the subject of this sketch, pleasantly situated in Adams Township on section 19. forms a pleasing picture of peaceful rural life, and the abode of plenty and comfort. Mr. Garrison, forming a portion of the bone and sinew of his community, has pursued the even tenor of his way perhaps without making any great stir in the world, but is a man upon whom his fellow-citizens look with confidence, and as such is amply entitled to recognition in a work of this kind. He has been fortunate, too, in the selection of his life partner, having for his wife a most amiable and intelligent lady, who has presided with dignity and grace over his household affairs, been a wise and judicious mother to a bright family of children, and in all things labored disinterestedly with her husband for the best good of those having a claim upon them.
Mr. Garrison was the second child of his parents, and was born in Washington Township, Dearborn Co., Ind. June 12, 1832. His father, William Garrison, was a native of Hamilton County, Ohio, and born about six miles from the city of Cincinnati. The mother was born in Pennsylvania, and when a young girl went with her parents to Indiana, where, when grown, she made the acquaintance of her husband. William Garrison was a man of much force of character and good education, and was a practicing physician of Dearborn County for a period of fifteen years. A strong anti-slavery man, he was fearless in the expression of his principles, and was also active in temperance work, devoting much time to the lecture field, in which he attained a fine reputation as an orator and a most efficient helper.
The parents of our subject left Indiana in 1855, and, crossing the Mississippi, located in Wapello County, Iowa, where the father died at the age of seventy-three years, in 1875. The mother passed away three years later, in 1878, while on a visit at the home of her son Amos, in Chicago, being also seventy-three years old. The six children comprising the home circle were named respectively: Sylvester, Omer, Herod, Amos. Robert and Silas. Of these all lived to mature years, and four are now living, being residents of Nebraska and Illinois, respectively.
Omer T. Garrison acquired his education in the common school, and when of suitable years began to make himself useful about the homestead. At the age of nineteen he became interested in carpentering, which he followed about a year, and when twenty-one began the study of pharmacy in Iowa, and also practiced medicine to a slight extent. This, however, not being congenial to his tastes, he abandoned the profession for the farm prior to his marriage, and wisely acquired ownership to a tract of land. He took unto himself a wife and helpmate, Miss Amanda McCullough, in April, 1858, the wedding occurring at the home of the bride in Iowa, and they began life together at a modest home in Van Buren County.
Mrs. Garrison is the daughter of William and Jane McCullough, natives respectively of Ireland and Pennsylvania. The father emigrated to the United States when a young man, settling at an early day in Switzerland County, Ind. There the parents were married, and removed thence to Iowa in 1849, locating in Van Buren County. Mr. McCullough, about 1849, while on a business trip to Keokuk was taken sick, and died at the age of sixty-seven years. Thus were shattered the fond hopes which had nerved the family to seek a wild new country in the hopes of bettering their condition. The terrible blow was most fatal in its effects upon the poor mother, who, left comparatively without means, and a large family to provide for, lost her reason and never recovered. She only survived five years, being tenderly cared for by her children, and dying at the home of her son in Iowa, in 1868, at the age of sixty-eight.
To the parents of Mrs. Garrison there were born ten children--Thomas, Elmira, Andrew, Jane, Mary, John, Margaret, William, Washington, and Olive, the wife of our subject. The birth of the latter took place Oct. 13, 1842, in Switzerland County, Ind., and she was there reared amid the pioneer scenes of a new country. Her education was conducted in the primitive schools, and she retains to this day many recollections of that time, and particularly the details of their departure for Iowa. She recalls the words of parting from old friends, the disposal of some of their effects and the loading of the others upon the wagon, by means of which with horses they were to make the journey to their new home. Its results and the sad scenes which followed are but one chapter among the experiences of a world whose children are prone to meet with disappointment and sorrow.
Mr. and Mrs. Garrison, however, have been prosperous in their home and in their children, and enjoy the friendship of a large circle of acquaintances. They came to Nebraska in. the fall of 1872, and lived at Beatrice until Mr. G. purchased 160 acres of land, which now forms a neat and comfortable homestead.
Our subject is a stanch Republican, politically, and with his estimable wife an earnest worker, like his father before him, for the success of the temperance cause. Seven children came to bless their union, the eldest of whom, Aldula, is now the wife of Charles Gale, who is connected with the Express Publishing Company at Beatrice; they have one child, a son, Clarence. Edgar married Miss Beatrice Lynch, and is farming in Adams Township; Mary F., Mrs. Orin Weyman, is the wife of a well-to-do farmer of Adams Township; Walter, William, Guy and Glenn are at home with their parents.

Guy Garfield GILBERT - Biography
HISTORY OF THE GILBERT FAMILY
Nations Center News-Thursday, January 13, 1983
by Linda Gilbert
Guy and Welda Andrew were the two youngest in the Parker Brown family. They settled farther east of Frank Gilbert's place.
Guy Garfield was born the fifth of April, 1878 (note- actually born 18 May 1878) and Welda was born the 21 of November, 1883 (note- actually born 4 November 1883).
Guy was married to the former Gertrude Tutty. Her father was the Reverend J.M. Tutty who was one of the first ministers to have full time services in the community and also lived in the community. Guy and his wife had four children, Blanche, Floyd, Freeman, and Wallace. Guy and his family were considered a very close family by those who knew them. Religion was very important and they belonged to the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Schooling was important to the family and guy helped to build a school around the Murchison area about 1911, according to the book, Building an Empire. His children attended school there.
Guy and his family first settled on what is known as the present Vic Lemm ranch and lived for some time there until they later moved to the Red Weater River about six miles south of Belle Fourche. I do not know the precise date they moved there. Here they had a large sheep operation. Freeman Gilbert stills lives on the ranch.
Guy Gilbert died on October 31, 1939 (note- actually died 28 October 1939) in the doctors office at Belle Fourche, while having a physical examination.

Death of Mrs. D. K. Kittle
Lavina C. McCullough, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm McCullough, was born in Switzerland county, Indiana October 30, 1837. With her father's family she came to Iowa in the year 1849, and was married to D. K. Kittle in village township, this county, in November, 1854. She united with the M. E. church in 1856, and was a consistent member during her lifetime, taking an active part in all the good work of that church. She was the mother of eight children, three boys and five girls, one boy and two girls having deceased before their mother. The cause of her death was heart trouble, followed by dropsy. She had been indisposed for some years, and had been seriously sick for some months preceding her demise. Death occurred on the morning of the 25 of September, and the funeral was held at the house, the ceremony being conducted by Rev. Paul McBeth. The body was laid to rest in the Purdom cemetery, where the many friends of the family bid a final adieu to the remains of a truly good and noble woman. It is not often perhaps that we would freely trade our chances in the world to come with our neighbors, but those who know the exemplary life of Mrs. Kittle, would all likely be glad if they had as clear a title to "mansions in the skies" as she. The sympathy of the community goes to be bereaved husband and children.
