Elmetta Fern COX - Obituary and Memories
The following are memories submitted to the DuPont Museum by Elmetta Cox
Mr. and Mrs. Hyland owned the dairy farm business at DuPont, adjacent to the powder plant fence, east of the main gate. they had two daughters, Virginia and Barbara. Fred Bittner worked for them there.
In the spring of 1922, Troy and Emma Burnside Cox and their three children, Charles born September 11, 1914, Delbert, March 8, 1916 and Elmetta, October 31, 1918, moved there. They lived in a large tent house until the fall, when they moved into the log house. The canvas of the tent soon disappeared, but the wooden platform, that served as floor was there a long time.
January 26th 1924, Fred Bittner married Mildred Burnside, who was a cousin to Emma. They lived in a cottage on the other side of the pond, below the main farm house. Their first child, Loretta was born March 6, 1925.
In the fall of 1925, Fred and troy took over the dairy, in partnership, and both families moved into the main farm house, we called the White House. The farm was lovingly referred to as the Snake Ranch and sometimes the Skunk Ranch. There was always plenty of both. A lot of the skunks mad their home in a large shed like building, behind the cottage. It was said to be a Hudson Bay packing shed.
Troy delivered bottled raw milk in the village, house to house, every morning. He met Mr. Gaul, who had the dairy in Nisqually, to buy cream for his customers. Mr. Gaul delivered in Fort Lewis. then known as Camp Lewis.
Fred took the evening milking in ten gallon cans, to the Meadow Sweet Dairy in Tacoma. He drove a large flat-bed Gardner truck. Each man had their daily chores 365 days a year, plus having to be the farms carpenters, electricians, mechanics, butchers, accountants, and veterinarians.
Fred and Mildred had their first son, Edgar, September 30, 1926 and James was born April 2, 1928.
On March 28, 1929 Emma died. It seemed everyone in the village cam to the funeral. It was held at Cassidy and Allen mortuary in Tacoma with interment in the Mountain View Cemetery. The Cox family left the farm in the winter of 1929, and Fred became sole owner of the business.
Robert was born to Fred and Mildred, October 2, 1931. Sometime after that DuPont moved a village house out to the farm, and the White House was torn down. March 16th 1937 Fred and Mildred's last son was born. He was the only on of the children to be born at hoe. they named him Gordon. All of the Children of both families attended the DuPont School, except for Gordon. In 1938 the Bittner family closed out the Dairy, and moved to Eatonville.
This information is as factual as my memory serves me.

Memories from Elmetta Cox Jones
When I was very little, I remember Fred putting me up on his shoulders and carrying me back to the log cabin. I probably had wandered off too far. He was very special to me. After my mother died, he and Mildred were even more special. Throughout their entire lives, they were like a second parents to me.
I learned early that the out house and baths in the wash tub beside the wood cook stove were a fact of live. I remember being first. I thought I was special, but actually it was because I had to go to bed first. Hot water was added for each of my two brothers. I can't remember if my parents had their baths the same night or not. I do know, when we moved into the farm house it was a real treat to have running water, a flushing toilet, and a long white bath tub.
Everyone had chores to do. I worked in the house. There was a constant clothes washing, there was a lot of canning, jelly and jams to make, and many meals to cook. We rarely had less then twelve at the table. I used to think my hands might grow to the dishes in the sink. I enjoyed helping Mildred diaper and feed babies, but sometimes that seemed never ending too. My brother Delbert was supposed to help my brother Charles unload the milk cans from the truck in the mornings, and get wood for the stoves in the house in the evenings. My brother Charles and I did his work for him to keep him from getting a switching. H e always managed to get one any way possible. He seemed compelled to stay in the village after school until long after dark. He the marble champ. He would win everyone's marbles, hive them all back, then set out the next week to in them all back again.
One day I was sent out to the ice house by the milk barn to get some milk, Jus as I got there, Old Cornucopias our bull (the biggest that ever there was) came charging down the road. I tuned and ran to the house as fast as I could go, with him him right behind me. Everyone came out of the house laughing for all they were worth. He wasn't chasing me at all. He got loose and decided to go down to the meadow for clover. He was led there often, by the ring in his nose. He was so docile, no one was afraid of him. Several years later, he was taken away and replaced with a bull much smaller and much meaner.
Life wasn't all hard work. My dad loved to swim, so he taught us all, while we were very young. On Sunday evenings during the summer, after the milking was finished , we would take our supper to Lake Sinclair to Patterson and swim. I remember going to Paradise at the mountain a few times. The road seemed very narrow and winding. After getting there, there were meadows you could walk through that were filled solid with flowers of every color. Once in a while we would take the ferry to Gig Harbor to dig claims.
We had cousins visiting a lot. We entertained ourselves with outdoor games in the summer, like hid and seek, kick the can, red Light , hop scotch, roll the goop, making kites, and bow and arrows. in the winter played checkers and cards with my brother. I was always losing. We did finally get a radio. We didn't listen too often. I remember a program called the Applebies., and Vic and Sade, then later Amos and Andy and Jack Armstrong.
