For One I love by Angelia J Harris (1848-1920)
We must part-perhaps forever,
Grief like ours no words can tell,
Oh! Tis cruel thus to sever
Those who love and love so well,
Coldly they our doom have spoken,
Heeding not our sighs and tears,
With a reckless haste they've broken
All the tender ties of years
Fare thee well! I'll not forget thee,
In this heart thou hast thy shrine,
Fondly I shall e'er regret thee,
Ever still my heart is thine.
Must our hopes, thus lighted, perish,
Drop and die, mid grief and pain?
No! The thought we still will cherish,
That we yet may meet again.
Loving hearts can beat sincerely
Though the lov'd one absent be,
I shall love thee quite as dearly
When you wander far from me.
Vain the hope, true hearts to sever,
Parted still they will entwine
Think not I'll forget thee, - never
Thine forever - ever thine
Oh, write to me, for when apart
Twill cheer the lonely hour,
Twill shed a sun-shine o'er my heart
Where haply clouds would lower.
Oh, write to me that thy cherished love
Will never fade away,
But like the polar star above
Will shine where'er I stray
