Just a short history of your mother's family - The Harris were raised in the same neighborhood as the McCullough's, in Switzerland County Indiana. James H Harris' father and mother were named Lysander Harris and Cassandra Harris (note: this is incorrect - Lysander was actually James Harris's brother). She died in Ind. and he her husband came to Iowa - remarried and was an invalid 12 years for the second wife to care for. He is buried in the Ashland Cemetery. James H Harris was born Nov. 15, 1823, Jane Mary McCullough born May 24, 1829, they were married in Indiana Feb 2, 1847 five children were born to them. They came to Iowa in or about 1849 and settled in the North Western corner of Van Buren County lived there about 2 years and moved to Ashland Wapello Co. after the flood of 1852. Water came up to top of windows in their house at Iowaville - Angelia J Harris was born Feb 4, 1848 Loren E Harris was born Aug 10, 1849 these two children were born in Indiana Loren died April 4 - 1887 - was married and lived near Boston Mass. had 3 children Emma - do not know - William - wifes name was Anna. Loren served in the U.S. regular army and stationed at Key West Florida Ira L Harris born September 10 - 1853 at Ashland Nerrissa C Harris born Dec 6 1855 at Ashland was married to Henry Green July 4, 1874 died April 27 1875 Omer H Harris born March 27, 1858 died April 9 1858. he was born after the husband died James H Harris died Oct. 7, 1857 Jane Mary Harris continued to live in Ashland until the fall of 1859 when she remarried Henry L Dornsife August 14, 1859 at a camp meeting near Angency Iowa. The minister R.B. Allender was a great friend of the family for more than 20 years after the wedding. Ira L Harris was married to Elizabeth McIntyre March 25, 1872 four children were born to them Daisy died when about 2 yrs old. Walter, Frank & Loren. Loren lives in Sacramento - all the others have passed on. Jane Mary McCullough Harris Dornsife went from Ashland to the house of H.L. Dornsife in the house that had been the Indian Agent home near Agency City. lived ther about 1 yr. then to Ottumwa for about 6 months then family moved to the farm near Eldon. I Martha Murray am the last one remaining on the old homestead. your grandmother died May 24, 1906. her father & mother were William & Jane Morrow McCullough. her grandparents came from Ireland in the late seventeen hundred or early 1800 settled in Penn. and later came to Indiana. This is a short history but all that I can remember - perhaps you will know the time of some of their deaths The enclosed poem is one mother had said Angelia had composed and written it a long time ago you see the paper is quite aged.
