MINER KILLS SELF TO END PAIN MISERY
Thumb's Death Blamed to Own Gun Following Oroville Autopsy
An autopsy performed in Oroville yesterday disclosed that Edward Auston Thumb, 61, of Chico, died from a gunshot wound, apparently slef inflicted, investigators said, as he lay alone in his mountain cabin suffering from a crushed leg. First reports Friday night said that Thumb, for 35 years a resident of Chico, died from injuries sustained when a huge boulder toppled upon him while he was at work prospecting near his cabin on the West Branch of Feather River, north of the Yankee Hill Road Bridge.
TWO SHOTS FIRED
Yesterday, however, Dr. L.A. Jacoby of Oroville declared death due to a gunshot wound. Two shots had been fired, one of which struck behind the right ear, but which did not penetrate the skull, and the other which went in near the same ear and emerged between the temple and left eye. Investigation yesterday disclosed that Thumb, his leg cruched and broken beneath the huge boulder, cut the boot from around the injured limb and pulled himself free. For 150 yards he dragged himself up hill to his cabin.
SHOTS END MISERY
Lying in his home for hours, suffering from excrutiating pain and with two shots fired through the cabin to attract attention going unheeded, Thumb decided to end his misery with the two bullets which he fired into his head, investigators concluded. Thumb's body was found Friday by two prospectors, H. Hendrickson and Ed Mitchell. The boulder is believed to have fallen on him either Thursday or Friday. The body is at oroville and will be brought to Chico for burial, according to relatives.
